Amahl and the Night Visitors’ is a one-act opera composed by Gian Carlo Menotti commissioned by the NBC TV station to be shown on 24 December 1951, making it the first opera specifically composed for television in the United States.
The success of this opera led to it being shown every year in the United States and beyond. The recording in this video is the 1955 performance with the actors from the original performance.
The story of this opera develops the story of Amahl, a disabled shepherd boy in Roman Judea, who, together with his mother, is visited one night by three kings on their way to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus.
