Robert H.

"Robert started our Piano Express class last October and immediately began making amazing progress, progressing through 3 levels in 7 months. He is now well into level 4, which is significantly more challenging, and is still mastering each piece and making excellent progress. Robert is fun loving but very serious about his piano playing – a delight to teach!"

Fayth R.

"Fayth began in Kindermusik Level 5 in the fall of 2020 and graduated from the Kindermusik program 2 years later. She has since moved from piano class to private piano lessons. She is a dedicated musician who practices regularly. She has become an excellent sight reader on piano and sings beautifully in the Southern Oregon Youth Ensemble. We are so delighted that she shares her musical talents with us!" - Deb, Choir Teacher & Heidi, Piano Teacher

June Practice Focus: Slooooow it Down!

This month when you practice, try playing everything slower.

  • Build your musical skills more quickly (really!)

  • Eliminate frustration when learning new songs

  • Learn the music correctly right from the start

  • Save enormous amounts of time

  • Remain confident

Stefan has 25 years of experience teaching guitar, piano, ukulele and bass guitar. Prior to moving to Grants Pass, he taught at his private studio as well as teaching guitar classes with Music Matters, a program through the Young Artists Music Conservatory of Vacaville that provided on-site music lessons to students in Solano County area schools.  His teaching incorporates all styles of music including classical, pop, rock, blues, country and folk.

Stefan has been performing for many years in bands on piano, guitar, and vocals. He played guitar in his first band at the age of 15. Over the years he has performed in a variety of groups including Backstreet, The Marty Martin Band, the Sterling Silver Band, and Afterglow. He was also a member of Rock Steady, the band that won the Sneak Preview’s Best Rock and Roll Band award two years in a row.

She has poured her heart and soul into all the music she makes, met every practice goal and participated in every concert she could squeeze in, despite having a busy schedule! As she gets ready to move out of the area, my hope is that music continues to be a huge part of her life and that through it she'll continue to grow and share that love with others! We will miss you, Charlise!"

Kristin holds music degrees from Iowa State and DePaul University, including a Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Shortly after receiving her master's degree, she began her professional career as an apprentice artist with the Santa Fe, Virginia, and Utah Opera companies.

After completing her apprenticeships, she balanced performing with developing skills as a Business Manager in the Advertising Industry. During this time, Kristin performed with local and regional opera companies including the Chicago Opera Theater, Augusta Opera, Natchez Music Festival, New Jersey Opera Theater, and Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. Kristin was also a featured soloist for Manhattan Concert Performance and MidAmerica Productions performing at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, as well as Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fischer Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York.

After 12 years in New York City, Kristin left her performance career and moved to Oregon to focus on her family. However, her love of music proved too strong to stay hidden. She began teaching private lessons in 2016 and has served as the music director for several local productions including Matilde, Tuck Everlasting and Anastasia. She has written and directed multiple Summer Encore Performances focused on raising money for local theaters and been featured as a performer with Barnstormers and Clarion Theatre Company.

Kristin loves sharing her knowledge of music and finding each student’s “true voice”. Lessons are rooted in the classical model of breath support and a relaxed vocal tract. Her belief is that no matter what style of music you want to sing, starting with a supported, relaxed tone promotes versatility, longevity and consistency in a singer’s production.

“Janae has always been a hardworking and dedicated student. These past few months she's put in so much work and effort for 2 different pieces. "Owen sets a great example of mindful practice. He's not content to sit back and passively follow along. He has strong opinions on how his music should sound and brainstorms how to achieve the sound he envisions. At only 8 years old, he has discovered advanced techniques all on his own at home during his practice. He frequently chooses the harder of two options, even when it challenges him. I couldn't be more proud of him!" - Celesta, Piano Teacher

Five Practice Tips for April

Practice is Magic! It really works!

The more you do it, the better you get!

1.) Make practice part of homework and consider it as important as other subjects, because it is! Music study gives a boost to the skills needed for successful academics.

2.) Make a practice plan and follow it. Practice at the same time every day. This helps you to remember. One of the reasons that students don't practice is that they forget.

3.) Schedule your practice around something you habitually do each day. For example, always practice as soon as you get home from school, right after dinner, etc.

4.) Choose your level of progress: 5 days each week will make good progress. 7 days will result in excellent progress. Less than 5 days will  result in slow progress.

5.) Practice Time: Beginners 20-30 minutes. Add 10-15 minutes for each year the student continues in lessons as the pieces played become longer and more complex.

Born into a family of musicians and artists, as a young child Emily could usually be found napping under the family piano as her mother played or sitting on the bench diligently waiting to perform her duties as designated page turner. As soon as she was old enough Emily began lessons with a local piano teacher. In the fifth grade she began her journey learning to play the saxophone. Thus began a life filled with music!

Having studied music at a community college, Emily completed her studies at Oregon State University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Music.

Emily's experience as a music educator includes several years teaching piano lessons and a couple of years teaching high school music classes.

As a performer, Emily has played saxophone with a number of community groups including the Big Horn Jazz band and the Rogue Gold Jazz band.

Outside of the music studio, Emily loves to paint and create art. She can also usually be found spending time in the garden or with her husband and young son.

Emily will be an instructor for our Rock Band Explorers, Jam Band 101, and Rock, Write, Record Summer Camps!

He has progressed through two books in four months and has been working extra hard to make it to the third book in record time - no doubt partially fueled by competition with the other two boys in this class!  He has a super friendly personality and is just an all-round great student!"

  • This stuff is boring, or too easy.

  • I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do.

  • I already learned that.

  • My instrument doesn’t work right.

  • It hurts – I am in pain when I practice.

  • I don’t have time to practice.

  • I don’t have any place to practice.

For good ideas on how do address these issues, we recommend this article: https://carolr3.sg-host.com/child-doesnt-want-practice/

Teresa began studying cello in elementary school and began private lessons in high school. During that time she played in many orchestras and chamber ensembles. After a hiatus to finish college, start a family, and begin a career as an elementary teacher and reading specialist, Teresa returned to cello playing and continued improving her cello skills through study with private teachers.

Now retired from public school teaching, Teresa has been teaching cello for many years. She is currently the principal cellist with the Three Rivers Orchestra and has performed with many other local ensembles including the Three Rivers Chorale, the Josephine County Messiah Sing-a-long Orchestra, the Rogue Community College Chorus, and the One Eleven Theater Company.

When not playing the cello, Teresa is reading, working crossword puzzles, walking her dogs, playing with her two cats, book-clubbing on zoom, and doing yoga. She enjoys spending time with her husband David and her sons Evan and Quentin.

Shout it Out From the Kitchen!

Help your child practice - even if you don't read music.

Ask these questions to help your child focus and let them know you care about their playing:

  • Can you tell me what your teacher wants you to work on in this piece?

  • I’d love to hear that again, but can you play with your right hand only?

  • That sounded difficult. I'd love to hear you play it slowly.

  • What do you think you need to work on in that piece?

  • That middle section was beautiful! Can I hear it again?

  • Wow! That use to be hard for you! Can I hear it again?

  • Remember, it's okay to make mistakes. Keep going! Your playing just keeps sounding better and better!

We are excited to announce that three of our students have taken the first Piano Adventures Exam and made it to the Bravo Board!

What is the Piano Adventures Exam?
The Piano Adventures Exam is a nationally recognized program that allows students to demonstrate their musical growth by performing and submitting three prepared pieces online. Each performance is carefully evaluated by a trained Piano Adventures exam coach, with feedback focused on technique, expression, and overall musicianship.

What is the Bravo Board?
The Bravo Board highlights students whose performances stand out for their musicality, confidence, and expression. Being selected is a special honor, and we are thrilled to celebrate Michael N., Sage O., and Elijah B. who earned a spot on the Bravo Board! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication!

Rachael is a singer and acoustic guitarist whose love of music started as early as she can remember. She was singing and memorizing songs before she could talk, and she's carried that love with her throughout her life. Active as a volunteer educator in the classrooms of her three children. Now that her youngest son is a senior in high school, Rachael's love for working with children prompted her to become a fully accredited Kindermusik Educator so she can share her passion for music and movement with the next generation!

In addition to teaching, Rachael can be found at performing at local vineyards, restaurants, weddings and special events, where she has been serenading local crowds for decades. When she's not performing, leading worship at church, or teaching Kindermusik classes, she's probably snuggled up with her kitty on her lap reading a good book.

Rachael has been married to her high school sweetheart for just shy of 26 years, and together they've raised three children, all of whom are musical!

Ezra A.

"Ezra was nominated for Student of the Month because, although he has only been a student for less than a month, he did something very extraordinary! Our new piano class "Piano Express" includes an app that scores the student's performance of each song. They must receive an 80% correct score to receive a star which allows them to move ahead to the next song. But if they stay on the same song they can earn more stars, jewels, and crowns by playing the song multiple times at 95% correct. They have time in class to learn these songs and they can also connect to the app at home. This last week between class and playing at home Ezra earned 123 stars, 120 jewels, and 40 crowns! Truly amazing!! Well done, Ezra!"

December Practice Focus:

Practice for Fun!

It is important to take time to play or sing music that you like at a level that is relatively easy.

Christmas break is a wonderful time to do this.

Find a book of familiar holiday songs that are easy enough to master without too much practice. We give our students a Christmas book each year just for this purpose.

Play or sing the songs for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for your stuffed animals, for your pets... just spend lots of time making music for fun!

  • Music Dictionary: Look up any words you don’t understand.

  • Metronome: Set it slow enough to play without any mistakes. Use it for your scales first to get used to it. When you can play scales to the metronome, use it to keep a steady tempo when practicing your songs. We recommend the Wittner MT50 Quartz metronome.

With over 40 years of experience under his belt, Mark is a seasoned performer and educator. Throughout his career, he honed his skills under the guidance of Daniel Glass. A well-known drummer and music educator, Glass was twice voted one of the top five R&B drummers in the world by Modern Drummer Magazine readers. In addition to performing with other musicians and groups, Mark led his own "little big band," for several years swinging through jazz festivals across the West Coast.

Since moving to Southern Oregon in 2001, Mark has become a fixture in the local music scene, playing with various jazz, blues, and big bands. A personal highlight was sharing the stage with the iconic Bo Diddley on a New Year's Eve in Medford. Mark's passion extends beyond the stage to teaching. Mark believes that being a great drum teacher is about nurturing well-rounded musicians as well as teaching rudiments and technique. He fosters a deep understanding of rhythm, instills crucial musical concepts like dynamics and phrasing, and ignites creativity and listening skills in his students. Mark lives in Grants Pass with his wife of 32 years. When not performing and teaching, Mark is an avid hiker and loves baseball.

Kindermusik October Playdate:
We added a new Playdate day! Saturday October 4th

Join us for a pretend Pumpkin Patch adventure! Wear your favorite friendly costume and explore "picking pumpkins", going on a "hayride," a stop at the "barn" for creature fun, instrument play, a special pumpkin story, and MORE!  All in the warmth of our classroom!

October Practice Focus:

Establish your Practice Routine

Use your SOSM Practice Record Chart. It is especially important to fill out the Weekly Practice Plan on the Back. Then on the front fill in a weekly practice goal that is realistic so that you are successful!  Be sure to mark each day that you practice!

Practice the same time each day.  It helps to associate your practice time with routine, like right after dinner or as soon as you get home from school.

A practice goal of 20 minutes each day that you practice is a good guideline for beginners. Then add 10 minutes every time you finish a level and receive a new method book.

Put an alarm in your phone for your practice plan and work hard to follow your plan closely. After a few faithful weeks it will become a habit and it will be much easier! Plus you will enjoy being able to play!

October Students of the Month!

Hannah H.

"Hannah has completely blown me away this past month with her passion for music and eagerness for progress. After completing Notes in the Fast Lane in incredible time, she worked through half of her new theory book (60+ pages) in a single week! Over the past year of being her teacher, I cannot recall a single time where my correction left her discouraged. Her response to a challenge is only ever enthusiasm! I could not be more proud

of her."

G. Lasky

"Lasky started piano lessons with us nine years ago, moved on to guitar, then ukulele and back to piano!  A multi-instrumentalist musician and magician, he recently picked up the bass guitar.  He has been playing the bass since June, currently working on Come Together by The Beatles, Bones by The Rills, and Money by Pink Floyd. Lasky is being chosen for this award because of his persistent dedication, passion, and love of music."

Kindermusik September Playdate:
Put on your overalls and boots because it’s time to visit the farm! We’ll do a craft together and then waddle like ducks, moo like cows, and play in colorful fall "leaves." As we play instruments, enjoy a story time, sing, and dance, we’ll celebrate Fall on the Farm. We will end with a "quiet time" as we listen to the wind in the corn.

This playdate is currently full. Email us to be added to the waitlist!

September Practice Focus:

Set Up or Refresh Your Practice Space!

  • Choose a quiet room or space that is away from distractions.

  • Always have your instrument out, accessible, and safe with an instrument stand or hanger.

  • Have a pencil, pencil sharpener, highlighter, and metronome within easy reach of your practice spot.

  • Add some shelves or bins to store accessories, sheet music, and other materials. A tidy practice space helps to maintain your focus.

  • Give your practice space a new coat of paint and/or add posters, memorabilia, or artwork that inspires you.  If you are the parent, give the student an opportunity to help decorate and make the space their own!

Rachel started with us at the age of 17 as an accompanist for our kids choir shortly after we opened our very first location in 2000. Soon she was working in administration plus teaching piano and Kindermusik. She left us after several years to begin raising and home schooling her family of six. Over the past 10 years, Rachel has also taught a variety of music classes for Rooted Home School Co-op, and in the fall of 2023 she served as the music teacher for Arrows Home School Co-op. We are delighted to announce that her family is thriving and ready to loan her to us again on Mondays–Thursdays from 2:00–5:30 as our Office Manager. Her role includes managing our calendar, helping families to enroll or make any necessary changes to their membership, and responding to phone calls and emails. If you need anything, she is here to help! She has also taken on the role of teaching our Kids Choir!
